Don’t ask what someone does. Ask how it feels when everything falls into place.
When I want to understand why someone does what they do, I never start with the work itself. I start with the person.
Last week, I was sitting across from a graphic designer. Twelve years of experience. A strong but diverse client list: a trendy coffee shop, a cultural center, social projects. And a garden center, too. She mentions the last one as if it were the odd one out.
Graphic Design Through Music
I could have focused on which designers inspire her. But I ask, “What are the moments in your life when everything just feels right?”
She's looking at me a little strangely.
There’s a moment of silence. She looks out the window and begins to describe how she sometimes goes for a walk in the sunshine, with her earbuds in, listening to the Australian band Royel Otis.
She smiles and beams. In her mind, she’s walking there. She talks about how she feels in that moment. After a few minutes, she says, “That music makes something so simple even more beautiful. It adds an extra layer of beauty to life.”
I nod. And I let there be a moment of silence. I want her to take a moment to let her own words sink in.
"Could it be that you're trying to create that through your work as well?"
She falls silent. She looks at me, confused, and her gaze freezes. It’s as if I’ve said out loud what’s been going through her mind for years, without her ever having found the words for it.
"Wow. Maybe. No, wait, exactly. That's spot on."
An extra layer
Those are the moments when I love my job the most.
I haven’t really explained anything. I create an environment where people learn to understand themselves better. And once you know that about yourself, it changes how you talk about your work, the clients you attract, how you write a proposal, and how you respond when someone has doubts.
She loves brands that add an extra touch of beauty to their customers’ lives. Coffee shops, cultural organizations, and even… a garden center. Businesses that bring color to life. That’s her filter, her customer profile, her yes.
And the customers who see that in her don’t look any further. They don’t choose her because she’s the cheapest or the fastest. They choose her because they see themselves in what she does. In who she is. Their whys fits together.
People don’t walk away from a brand that feels like a part of themselves. You don’t need a loyalty program or discounts. This is about something deeper: storytelling builds loyalty through identity.
The story was already there. She just needed someone who would ask the right questions and stay silent long enough to let it come out.
Brands whose mission is to add an extra touch of beauty to life couldn’t find a better graphic design partner than her. And she knows exactly what to focus on from now on.
